There is an app that simplifies the finding of nice places to stay, because the travelers pass on their personal experience to the community with an evaluation. This also has the consequence that you meet like-minded people on the recommended places and those haven´t necessarily to travel with a truck.

For example, we met jens. Eight months ago he started with his bike in vancouver, canada and in the meantime he is in the south of méxico. For all not-overlander: everybody on the road, even we with a big rig, try to save weight. Always. Not jens, who tows a 25kg heavy bike trailer and in it sits his dog hans. Hans weigh about 45 kg and feels – even if it is a ridgeback-rottweiler-mixture – happy „as a poodle“ (means: happy as a clam). Hans in happiness!

(In the german language we have a saying: „pudelwohl“ which is directly translated to „happy as a poodle“. And there is a fairy tale called „hans im glück = hans in happiness“ and i don´t know if this is understandable in english spoken countries)

Street parking with family connection

Montericco Hawaii is a narrow peninsula with black lava sand. It´s located in the south of Guatemala between the pacific coast and the mangroves of the plains. The so called ‚canal’ is navigable until El Salvador.

Seven months ago, Fredy and Katy opened their small family hotel, which they had build by their own: Hotel La Guitarra. The large pool with jacuzzi is Fredy’s pride. On weekends, families from Guatemala City having a break here from the big city jungle. Then the 6 rooms are occupied with up to 40 persons and more. From Sunday afternoons, the beach again belongs to the small fishing community, the pigs, the chickens and the dogs. Thank you for your hospitality, family connection and Katy’s Venezuelian food. lake atitlán

Meanwhile, we have arrived – at least temporarily – in Guatemala. Temporarily, because the visa for méxico is valid for “only” a half year. We will return to méxico to explore yucatan and visit some mayan sites.

Together with other travelers from 10 nations, we celebrated x-mas with a pot luck party at the latke atilán, which is still nice for a swim, even during wintertime and an altitude of 5200feet .

overlander oasis / oaxaca

The canadian couple leanne and calvin offer a family place to travelers. Actually the backyard is the overlander oasis and 4-5 smaller rigs will fit in. Leanne and calvin´s sleeping room is an old greyhound bus which already had run 4 million miles and the bus is parked in the middle of the house. Many overlanders who are traveling between north- and south america will visit oaxaca and therefore the overlander osasis is the place to be if you want to listen to traveler stories .

also calvin is a skilled mechanic who had repaired our webasto heating system and other stuff. If he can´t do it by his own he will recommend the right people. If you come to oaxaca, please make your reservation in advance so they can squeeze you in.

After cortés had done a massacre in cholula, he crossed over this 3700m high pass to advance to tenochititlán (today méxico city).

To be grounded up there is not funny, what we could experience by ourselves. In the evening we pulled a pick-up truck out of the road trench (they already had build up their bivouac) and in the next morning our car didn´t start. In the elevation of 12000 feet the motor probably hadn´t enough oxigen and it was night, until help came. A helpful mexican guy had brought a mechanic from méxico city and the starterspray breathed new life into the benz.
