Many thanks to juana córdova and sebastián malo for their exceptional hospitality, the glimpse into her artistic work and the stay in this breathtaking location.

Juanas statement about her work:

My work is directly influenced by the places I’ve lived. When I lived in the city I was interested in issues related to social stereotypes and the dialectic between the natural and the artificial. At that time, my works express concerns about the role of women in a society influenced by the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. Other proposals reflect on the food industry; in this respect I built a series of structures with the bones of edible animals as a kind of homage.

My approach to the botanical world and its history has been an important motivation for some years. In this stage I created the gardens of plants made in paper.  The plant world was the link to make the decision of my last move. Now that I live in the countryside, on the beach, nature has become the protagonist of my work.

To observe, to walk, to collect and to investigate are daily activities and this has became a part of the creation process. The materials I’m using are objects collected during my walks on the beaches such as feathers, bones, sticks or pieces of garbage that take on meaning by themselves in the artworks, where they acquire symbolic characteristics.

Reserva Rio Guaycuyacu sapote de san lorenzo jackfruit mimi jim just outside the reserve !

Jim and mimi are pursuing a similar project as suzi and alan carle, who founded the “botanical ark” in australia and through them we got the address of the reserve rio guaycuyacu.

For more than 30 years, the former us americans have been living and working here in the ecudorian jungle and have made it their mission to save edible tropical fruits from extinction. More than 600 different trees, bushes and shrubs thrive on his property and jim gave us a great guided tour, a gustatory but also olfactory journey through the wonders of nature.

Iglesia de la compañia de jesús / ecuador

The old town of quito is blessed with numerous churches. Well, I only go into such buildings when my blood pressure is low but after entering the iglesia de la compañia I needed a pack of antihypertensives.

I only know two churches that are secured with a fence (the second is notre-dame-de-la-paix de yamoussoukro *) and here in quito mainly begging indigenous people are kept away from the church portal. This church here asks for $5 entrance fee for every visitor to admire the 7 tons of gold. (wich is now 270 000 000us$) Gold, which was probably mainly stolen and remelted from the indigenous people. oh yes, and you are not allowed to take pictures in this church. Truly, truly a christian revelation!

* the second largest showpiece building of christianity stands in yamoussoukro /ivory coast. This church, allegedly donated by the president houphouët-boigny, could accommodate all christians of the country at the same time.
