mazatlán

The theater “teatro ángela peralta was built in the years 1869 till 1874 as an opera house and later on it was used as a cinema. In 1964 the operation discontinued and in 1975 it the hurricane “oilvia” hit it badly and gave it the rest. It collapsed completely and the city government wanted to tear it down. In the late 80s there was initative to save the theater, in 1990 it was declared as a national cultural monument and it reopened again in 1990.

The old town is pitoresk, many newly renovated buildings alternate with complete ruins and often the fresh painted facade is a pure scenery. Be sure to visit the covered market place.

la paz -> mazatlán

Here’s some tips for mexico travelers:

The ferry connection “TMC” from la paz to the mainland mexico (mazatlán) is cheaper than the baja ferry and has an open upper deck. Should your vehicle be longer than 6m, it is automatically classified in the motorhome class of 11m. Ask for a price in the exact length of your vehicle, we had thereby saved 40%. The advantage of the open upper deck is also that you are allowed to sleep in the vehicle during the 16-hour, nightly crossing. Tip: Do not park close to the ventilation shafts of the ship, it´s very noisy there and don´t look too much forward to the included dinner.

sea lions & whale sharks

La paz is the metropolis in the south of baja calaifornia. The ferries to the mainland mexico are starting here and there are possibilities to visit sea lion colonies and even you can dive with whale sharks. We had choosen a privat boats tour, so we could say how long we will stay at the locations and our capitain daniel nunez velderrain did a great job (+52 612 1350684)

The sea lions are very territorial and would attack any intruders on “their” island, but in the water they are curious and playful.

It was the end of their visit on the mexican coast and most of the giant whale sharks are already on their way to australia or india. Sensationally our captain was able to locate two animals. Despite having fins on the feet and kicking them with all force the animals slide with casual movements and past me easily. wow !!

triunfo / baja california sur

Triunfo was a city. But when the gold and silver mines were depleted in1926, the number of inhabitants decreased from 10,000 to now 380 people. A highlight in the village is the cafe triunfo and when you have an illustrious breakfast at the table on the outside wall of the former prison, please have a look behind you. The bullet holes in the wall derives from the shootings of the delinquents.

botanical garden “buena fortuna” / la ribera

We had a recommendation to visit the botanical garden in la ribera. This private run project reminded me very much to the project of the australian biologist alan carle, who founded togehter his wife susan “the botanical ark” in mossman / australia and still runs it.

The botanical garden “buena fortuna” on the baja califonia sur is a project of well known biologist gabriel howearth (seeds of change) and kitzia kokopelmana (countryside designer with useful plants & kitchen alchemist). Both projects see themselves as a living seed bank for endangered and rare plant species, with a special attention to the useful plants.

Kitzias mission is: “I dedicate my life of Service to the Earth to all living beings. May every seed planted be multiplied to bring abundance to every home. May every garden be cultivated organically so the ecosystems allow a great diversity of natural life to thrive. It is my purpose in life to carry on organic seeds of botanical diversity to co-create beauty and abundance now and for the future generations.”

frank arnold art & gallery

our friend patrick corr had recommnded visiting this art place in san josé del cabo: the american artist frank arnold has realized his gallery together with his studio and living space under one roof. Besides many huge paintings and sculptures two large coffee table books are displaying his artworks in his “showroom”.

Little episode: frank has experienced as an 8 years old boy that he was adopted and therefore often the number 8 can often be discovered in his art works. Should you visit san josé del cabo frank arnold art & gallery is a “must see”.
