Marabout Sidi Mashour

A marabout has nothing to do with the bird of the same name; in Morocco it is a tomb for an Islamic saint. Here in Tinghir stands the marabout of Sidi Mashour, Mohamed explained. He selflessly offered to show it to us – on the way to the inevitable carpet shop owned by one of his relatives.

He told us that women still use the room to break the fast during Ramadan. Black traces of candle soot on the central pillar and walls evoke an Arabian Nights scene of colourfully veiled figures around tables laden with food.
