Jonas Burgert

Remember this name. He is a rising star in the art world and there is no doubt that his work will gain even more media attention.

In 2012 Bettina and I sat spellbound in front of a huge painting at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver, without yet knowing who the artist was. The label read “Jonas Burgert, Berlin / Germany”. Minutes later we had looked him up and sent him an email. In 2013 we were invited to his exhibition “Schutt und Futter” at the Kestner Gesellschaft in Hanover.

Now we have visited his Berlin studio and were more than impressed. What a start to our journey through the world and through art, which will truly get under way when our truck is shipped to America. Anyone who cannot afford a “real” Burgert – perhaps because their walls are only three metres high – should at least treat themselves to the book “Schutt und Futter” (Kestner Gesellschaft, Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König). © n. g.

Jonas Burgert calls one corner of his studio his “brain opener”. Two walls, a table and the floor are completely covered with scraps: 1950s fashion icons hang next to photographs of bloodstained attack sites and people painted grey climbing through an equally grey rock face. It is a wild mixture that he immerses himself in before working, to open his “pores”. Thank you, Jonas, for opening the door to your studio. It was an incredibly exciting morning for us. © b. g.
