Tieken Gallery Presents Co_Works: A Transatlantic Venture with Guest Curator, Norbert Guthier

Imagine you could travel the world, stopping wherever you wish to meet your favorite artists and to visit with them in their studios, spending a day or two watching them at work.

For Norbert Guthier of Germany, this is not a dream but a reality that he has been living for the last several years. Not only has Guthier been visiting artists throughout the Americas, he has created a book, Co_Works, that combines photographs by Guthier with original artwork from the artists inspired by these photos.

Living the ultimate curator’s dream, Guthier is now working on a series of shows featuring these Co_Works with the premier American showing at Tieken Gallery opening February 27, 2016.

Featured in the show will be artists Emilio Martinez, Miami, FL; Matt Sesow, Washington, DC; Heather Wilcoxon, San Francisco, CA; Matthias Bolz, Dresden, Germany; Barbara Fisher, Asheville, NC; Brad Moody, Houston, TX; and Fred Tieken, Paradise Valley, AZ & Venice Beach, CA; with photography by Norbert Guthier, Frankfurt, Germany.

The opening reception on February 27 will be by RSVP. An event page will be posted on the Facebook Tieken Gallery page in mid February so please sign up early. We are expecting a full-to-capacity opening and you must be on the guest list to attend this event.

bert esenherz

I promised myself to take special care of my new super wide angle lens, but soon when bert started to paint, it was done not only to my jacket and trousers

as a teenager bert esenherz had studied  at the academy of arts in berlin. There he was thrown out because he almost never showed up in the classroom. For his livelihood he jobed in a pub, and soon became his best customer. He went to new york and decided to dedicate his life to the arts and started as a street artist. In 2001, after many years in New York he decided cross the usa by feet. He grabbed a large image, put on a cart together with some belongings took off with olmost no money. In the more urban places he could make a liveing through pictures sales, then in the rural parts the fight for survival began. when he was hungry , he painted 10-dollar notes and replaced them for something edible. In After september 11th things had changed totally, he stopped the project and returned to new york. Since two years he lives in los angeles and he is represented in several major international galleries. It was really nice to chat with him and he promised to participate in the co-works project. So be curious and see what will come up.

hollywood animals

Our friend stephen in frankfurt said, if we would come to los angeles, then we should visit his sister bettina there. She and her man eric operate the company “hollywood animals” and the two have a lot of hand-raised lions, tigers, bears, monkeys, cats, dogs, which could be seen as “actors” in hollywood films. For sure, you can only deal with such animals, if you can read their body language, but I was surprised how accuratly the bettina could forcast their behavior . And especially for us her husband eric “dared” into the tiger cage. It was obvious that the tigers love him and everyone wanted to be more cuddled than his fellow creature. Thanks to bettina and eric and all the staff members that we were welcomed at their place. And of course: many thanks to stephen in frankfurt !!
