For the German Water Foundation, Peter Trautwein fundamentally redesigned the fog-collector system. Special meshes capture droplets from the fog and channel them into gutters. Earlier installations, first used in Chile, had two main problems: very high wind speeds could buckle the structures, and the meshes tore under the constant strain.
The new collector is stronger and much more flexible. Different types of mesh are also being tested scientifically on the new installation. A video about the construction and operation of the system will appear on the blog soon.
