sign post forest / watson lake

After the japanese attack on pearl harbor the us military pushed to construct a land bridge to alaska and the 2414-kilometer-long alaska highway was built by canadian and american soldiers in just one year.

1942 carl lindley, a homesick american soldier nailed a sign of his hometown to the army signpost in watson lake and since then people screwed and nailed like cracy.

Until today approximately 80000 signs have been added to the posts and the visitor center provides more poles, so tourists from all over the world have space for their signs.

hitchBOT / 2

The great idea came to germany: „Can robots trust humans“ is the idea behind the hitchhiking robot who had crossed canada by it´s own last summer.

Together with its “parents” hitchBOT had visited our place in frankfurt / germany. The reunion was great because together with hichBOT we had started our trips through america in halifax in july 2014. Here you can see the blog contribution about hitchBot in halifax

apalachicola

We met John in Apalachicola. With his 50 year old “Beluga” he ancored at the quay of the small town and we had chosen the harbor as a good place to stay as well. John invited us spontaneously to come on board and on this evening he told us many things about his life. He lives on his boat since 31 years and is travelling in southern america and in the bahamas.

The next morning we invited him for breakfast and he returned the favor and sharpened our kitchen knives – a business he had learned from his father. It was an interesting encounter, one of those which makes our travel special …….. © ng

kennedy space center

The best place to investigate the rumors if the americans had been to the moon or not is of course the space center.

In cape canaveral the kennedy space center is very impressively and absolutely worth a visit. Here you see an original saturn 5 rocket together with a used and burned return capsule, the only item which returned to earth. The event to access the exhibition hall of  the original atlantis shuttle is stunning and ends with a “wow” effect. With simulators you can try to control the moon landing ferry  or you can land the shuttle on a tarmac runway.

The development of space-suits can be seen up to Alan Shepards used work-clothing with real dust from the moon. You can explore huge walk-in models for example the international space station and some spaceships, the hubble telescope, lots of original rockets and there are also great 3d movies  on display from the iss (international space station) and from the universe. And even there is the opportunity to touch an original tiny moon rock. Does it need further proofs? Here is the ultimate one: inside the adjacent restroom everything worked! (see also blog-contributory: https://blog.guthier.com/?p=947)

Wow. The americans had been really on the moon. :-)  © n.g.

angela & philipp

Cyclists with large pack bags on their bikes are something special on the blue ridge mountain parkway. We just looked around at one of the scenic lookouts, as the two stopped next to our truck and chated us up in german. They are almost on the same tour as we are, traveling from toronto to south america, but the two are likely to be much faster on their destination. They want to face by the glaciers of patagonia in 20 months time. Taff.

We invited them for a coffee and a chocolate bar, both useful for getting ahead. © n.g.

hitchBOT

What an awesome idea! A robot who hitchhikes through canada, by itself. 6125 km from halifax to victoria. An art project which will show if robots can trust humans and by the way: for humans it´s forbitten to hitchhike in canada! The idea was born by frauke zeller und david harris smith, they are the „parents“ of hitchBOT. It sits beside the road and wafes his swim-noodle-arms, the swim noodle legs stick in rubber boots, the head is a cheese dome with winking digital eyes. From time to time it talks, takes automatically pictures of its journey, is connected with faebook and twitter and sends its gps position. Its parents look forward to many adventures und that it will be charged regularily on cigarette lighters or it´s allowed to stay overnight with its host family if the weather gets too nasty to hitch.

I had heared about this project weeks ago in germany but the probability to meet this guy wasn´t very big. A girl friend of mine sent us a message to halifax that hichBot will be launched on the 27.th of july, the same day and the same place where we started our trip. David quickly replied my mail and so hitchBOT got a special ride in our truck. During load and unload it at the pier of halifax crowds of people gathered together and everbody had heard about hitchBOT in the press and they all were very excited. Great, this project was present wordwide in the media even before it was on it´s way.

We wish hitchBot a save hike and we will report its adventures. © n.g.
