„Normally there are just 10 vehicles and the thermal water is blue“ the ranger told us after weh ad driven 10miles on a bad dirt road. however, now it was easter holidays, the campground completely overcrowded, the water color was nondescriptinal and you hardly could find a place to stand in the pool. Everywhere there would be a “campground full” sign but here in mexico the rangers worked hard to squeeze everybody in.
Only in the el niño years when it has rained, it blooms in the anza borrego desert. Why are so many dead bees in the flowers? No idea.
After the exhibition we are now back on the way to san diego and we rested for the second time at the salton sea. Because of the millions of dead fish we investigated and got a result: to have an edible fish they introduced 1929 tilapias and despite the salty seawater the fish breed very well. However, they are not adapted to the environmental conditions and once the water gets too cold or the oxygen content is too low, the tortured fishes die often with a disease (vibrio) in millions. Sadly many seabirds that feed on these fishes die as well.
Should you ever come to tucson, a visit of the arizona-sonora desert museum is a must. It´s an impressively beautiful plant with a unique mix of an open space zoo, botanical desert garden and a geological exhibition. Sensational !!!
