termales de alicante

The warnings about el salvador were varsatile. Super dangerous, criminal gangs etc and our central american guide had the title: don’t go there, it’s dangerous, you will die “. But everyone in the neighboring country, the neighboring city, the neighboring district and all those who claim this have never been there before. Our first destination in el salvador was the hotsprings “termales de alicante”, a hot water paradise consisting of 15 swimming pools with different temperatures. After our round trip through el salvador – which we survived unscathed – we stopped here a second time and enjoyed the plant mostly for ourselves. Almost – because at night 3 heavily armed guards were on duty. But that’s common here, even for any better fries hut.

boris ciudad real / el salvador

We discovered his work in a great, guatemalan gallery for contemporary art and I asked him for a studio visit. He lives and works in el salvador, a country tortured by gang crime in central america. I squeeze our truck backwards into the dead end street where he lives, and his entire family welcomed us warmly. Boris presented his latest work and is pleased to be involved in my co_works project. Great. You can look forward to seeing what will be shown at the upcoming co_works exhibition in los angeles (april 2018).

sololá / guatemala

We entered Guatemala on my birthday. So this picturesque country was a kind of a birthday present. We spent 3 chilli days at the Lago Atitlán, happy that the rainy season seems to come to an end. I felt so laid-back that I forgot all the rules of safe travels when we went to the big market in Sololá on Friday. Prompt it happened: I had – stupid – a credit card with me and – more stupid – all notes clearly visible in the wallet. I had bought two big sacks to collect our dirt laundry, as soon as someone elegantly and imperceptibly stolen the purse from my locked pocket.

The story took a half-conciliatory end when a pupil who had found the wallet under a sales table with its contents – apart from the cash of course – contacted us by Facebook in the evening. The whole family came the next day to bring our belongings back. The credit card was, of course, already locked and worthless, but we got back our copied IDs, which already look pretty authentic.

Maybe I will be reminded in the future by every laundry to be mindful. So no socks will get lost any more – probably.

back in méxico

frankfurt airport

We started the next section of our trip from halifax to patagonia. The truck was stored méxico city, well protected under a roof, which was built especially after we left méxico. but unfortunately the cover was not translucent enough to load the batteries through the solar system. Shit happens. Mishaps are also part of such a journey …

“heavenly heckflosse” / gold medal

Today I got a great mail from gary anderson, the editor-in-chief of the mercedes-benz club of america. I was awarded a gold medal for the best photography in the american car magazines in 2016. I had photographed andrew atwood´s perfectly restored “heckflosse” for „the star“ magazine as a small thank you for his help and support searing for the failure in our truck software.

By the way: Last year I got gold medals as well. At that time for my contribution “the big trek” in “the star” magazine.

globetrotter meeting

It was nice, at the fifth globetrotter meeting at the unimog museum / gaggenau / germany. Even a unimog, which we had seen in alaska, was here. Making friends, having interesting conversations, cooking and eating together, that´s what makes such meetings special. In addition, several lectures (a small one held by myself), completed the program.
